Hello. My name today and for this blog is Piper. Piper Havens III to be exact. If you read more of my posts, you will learn why I am writing under a pseudonym. I do actually have a warrant for my arrest in one of the fifty States, but it's for not appearing in Court. I'm not a felon, just an older guy who doesn't see much justice taking place in parts of our legal system. So, I don't play in that sandbox anymore, or at least not voluntarily. So, today I am starting a blog. It will help me get used to writing a story each day that has something to do with my life. And since I am also starting a business today, getting some practice writing in a story telling style will help me to write more interesting content for my business. What I am thinking is that I like the idea of what happened to Julie Powell when she started a blog to put down her thoughts each day she cooked a recipe from Julia Childs' cookbook and people found their way to her blog and it grew in popularity over time. That is what I hope happens with my blog. So, if you are reading this, I hope you enjoy my short little daily stories! You first might be wondering "how did he pick Piper Havens III"? Well, first, there was a guy named Richie Havens who sang a great song named "Freedom" in front of around 400,000 young people in 1969 to open the Woodstock concert in upstate New York. It was a truly rocking song, and Richie was up there on stage, all by himself, with just an acoustical guitar, with some of the liveliest foot stomping I ever saw, and he was working up a sweat, and he was giving that song all he had, and it was rousing, and it was enthusiastic, and it was hot in the sun and he was totally cookin' doing that song. I will never forget it. You can find it on Spotify since I did and then added it myself.....pause.....I'm back...I just listened to that song again, just to be in the mood as I write...you might want to take a break and go listen to it yourself ;-) Now, onward to the next part of picking my pseudonym Piper Havens III....Piper was a part of a company name I incorporated a long while back....and "III" was just because I liked the sound of "the Third" on the end. Freedom will be something of a theme that winds in and around my blog posts as you will come to see. One part of freedom that someone, anyone, might feel in their life has to do with how much you have collected materially over time.....your furnishings, clothes, kitchen stuff, house stuff, tools, wall hangings, cars, sporting gear, on and on and on......from my own experience, when you cut loose a lifetime of "stuff" that you collect while growing a family with 3 kids, that "cutting loose" of all that stuff , well, it's a kind of freedom that you likely haven't felt before in your life. You see, growing up in America, for the larger Middle Class part of the population at least, means you are already accumulating stuff as a small child (without having any idea what's going on) and it just keeps on going like that and if you then have your own family and kids, the accumulation keeps on going, and going and going....and you end up with a gigantic amount of "stuff". I mean, the pile you collect is one really huge pile.... Have you ever stopped to try and imagine the colossal amount of stuff Americans have stuffed into mini storage spaces all over America? It is truly epic. It's beyond epic. So that's something that I just did recently. I did an epic job of reducing my accumulated footprint of "stuff" and I went from a storage footprint of one and a half full 10x30 spaces down to a single 5x5 space, about what I can carry in an SUV without a U Haul trailer. That was, to put it one way, life changing. I not only felt lighter, I was lighter! I mean muuuuuucccchhh lighter! OK, time to pause a moment. I just checked, and this "first" New Beginnings post is now just over 700 words, and I want my posts to be well under 500 words on average, but for the very first one, I am allowing for a bit more story telling to get things underway. So, perhaps a good set of final words for this starting post, can be taken from Janis Joplin when she sang "....freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose...." in her song Me and Bobby McGee. Well said Janis, well said. Give those words a thought or two over the next few days. I hope you won't think that ending was too abrupt.....I'm sort of new to this writing thing. Come again for my next post...it will be a bit shorter for sure. Piper Havens III
